Jay M. Potter

Jay M. Potter is Of Counsel to the Charleston office of Bailey & Wyant, PLLC. His focused is in the practice area of environmental litigation; and he has more than 20 years of experience defending clients against claims being made in civil law suits and in governmental regulatory actions. He also defends clients in product liability and other civil law suits that involve engineering issues.

Jay is originally from Wheeling, West Virginia. He has an engineering degree from the United States Naval Academy, an M.B.A. from Bryant College, and a law degree from West Virginia University. Prior to becoming an attorney, Jay was a surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy and served in the Cruiser-Destroyer Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, in the Amphibious Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and in U.S. Naval Forces Vietnam. During his Naval service, Jay was responsible for the operation and maintenance of a variety of mechanical, electrical, and electronic shipboard systems.

Jay is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia, the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia, the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia, and the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit.

Jay and his wife Zen reside in Charleston. Jay has a son Jeremy and daughter-in-law Po Chi, both of whom are employed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in its Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.
